In December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempted to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe by means of a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp. Later becoming known as the Battle of the Bulge, it was Nazi Germany's last-ditch effort to drive back Allied forces. Key players in the battle included the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Luxembourg resistance, free France, all against Nazi Germany.
Although the Battle of the Bulge was a decisive ally victory, it caught the Allies completely by surprise, and was the USA's costliest battle in terms of casualties. This battle also depleted many of Germany's war-making resources.

The Battle of the Bulge was by far the largest and bloodiest land battle fought by the United States in World War Two. Germany's goal for this battle was to split the British and American Allied line in half, capture Antwerp, and then proceed to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis Powers' favour.
