The battle, which lasted from July 17, 1942-February 2, 1943, stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning point of the war, finally putting things in the Allies favour. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest battles in history, with combined military and civilian deaths, nearly reaching 2 million.

The Battle of Stalingrad was viewed as a large turning point and a very crucial battle in the war on the Eastern Front. The German's believed that the battle would be easy, and that they would have the city under siege in no time, however, they were not prepared for the soviet's to be able to withstand their attacks. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad began in late summer 1942 using the 6th. The attack was supported by heavy Luftwaffe bombing that reduced much of the city to rubble. The fighting digressed into building-to-building fighting, and both sides sent soldiers into the city.
By November 1942, the Red Army had the Axis forces on the flanks were overrun and the 6th Army was cut off and surrounded in the Stalingrad area. Hitler ordered that the army stay in Stalingrad and make no attempt to break out; instead, attempts were made to supply the army by air and to break the encirclement from outside. Heavy fighting continued for another two months. By the beginning of February 1943, the Axis forces in Stalingrad had exhausted their ammunition and food. The remaining elements of the 6th Army surrendered. The Soviet's had achieved victory finally after five months, one week, and three days.
